Workplace Bullying, EIU Independent Research Study - 2011
While working on my MBA at Eastern Illinois University, I completed an Independent Research Study during the Spring 2011 semester with Dr. Melody Wollan and two other MBA students: Nicole Goddard and Jackie Alexander. I focused on the topic of workplace bullying while Nicole focused on employee engagement and Jackie focused on recruitment/marketing messages.
Upon completion of our research and papers, we presented our findings to the EIU School of Business faculty and graduate students in April as well as the EIU Housing and Dining Marketing Team in early October.
During that summer, we all submitted our papers to the Institute of Behavioral and Applied Management Conference (IBAM) in Orlando, Florida and were accepted for full presentation and proceedings. We all made solo presentations on our research and papers. Also exciting, conference organizers recognized the quality of our research by asking us all to serve as session-chairs for other sessions during the conference. My work was identified as being of high quality and I was considered for the IBAM Graduate Student Scholarship (that was eventually awarded to a PhD candidate).
In regards to the IBAM Conference, here's what Dr. Melody Wollan had to say:

In regards to the IBAM Conference, here's what Dr. Melody Wollan had to say:
- "I was in attendance at both sessions and Carly performed her duties and responsibilities admirably. She made me proud as her mentor, and was professional in all of her actions and communications. She was sought out for discussion by faculty and other attendees throughout the three days we were in attendance. She attended other sessions and participated in events fully. I overheard many faculty in attendance quiz her on whether or not her next step was a PhD program and compliment her high level of skills demonstrated at such an early stage of her academic career."
Workplace Bullying - Abstract
The objective of this study is to determine the need for formalization of workplace bullying policies in organizations and which level of the organization should develop and administer those policies. While the issue of bullying has been a popular topic in recent news and personal conversations, it has not been adequately researched in workplace settings.
We surveyed executives from 50 separate organizations to examine their workplace bullying practices. We found that acceptance of bullying policies was more likely when those policies were developed by Human Resource Departments and when policies were formalized. Women felt more strongly than men about having a workplace bullying policy and indicated a stronger understanding of other company policies. Organizational size did not have a significant relationship to responses. I'm published! (Ok, well not exactly. But my research is cited in Chapter 17: Strategies for Managers in Handling Workplace Bullying, written by Dr. Melody Wollan.) Bonus: it includes an infographic of my research!
The book, released in August 2013, was featured in the January 2014 edition of Glamour Magazine. |
